Reading Room 001: Virginia Woolf
Let our thoughts flow in this reading ROOM of our own...
In our information-rich modern world, the topic of gender issues—so closely related to our lives—has become a notorious battleground on the internet. People often express their firmly-held views in sarcastic, arrogant, and even rude ways.
If you’ve had enough of this extreme discourse and find yourself thinking, "Why has a topic meant for the benefit of all humanity turned into such a fierce conflict?" then let’s turn to reading! Let’s return to the gentle haven constructed of paper and ink, where we can engage in thoughtful discussions grounded in reason and logic.
We are excited to announce the formation of a new book club dedicated to exploring feminism, masculinity, and a variety of gender issues.
For our first session, we are honored to welcome—Virginia Woolf. A representative figure of feminism and stream-of-consciousness literature, Woolf is known for her unique writing style. The power in her work is subtle and often requires careful consideration, yet it is profoundly thought-provoking.
In her essays, Woolf discusses women's independence and their rights to think and express themselves, addressing issues relevant to her time that remain significant today.
This does not mean that everything she expresses is absolute truth. As she herself stated:
"I is only a convenient term for somebody who has no real being. Lies will flow from my lips, but there may perhaps be some truth mixed up with them; it is for you to seek out this truth and to decide whether any part of it is worth keeping."
Thus, we invite you to join us in reading and reflecting! No one is here to preach to you; we all simply wish for you to find your own direction.
Our book club will use writing as a medium! This means that participants can choose any work written by Woolf and write down their reflections, share them with the group, and read what others have written, engaging in thoughtful responses and discussions.
